Cypress Gardens

Florida Guide > Accommodation

On our last visit to Florida we decided to get away from the hurly burley of the Disney theme parks and visit the now re invented Cypress Gardens. This park is situated around 45 minutes drive south of Kissimmee in Winter Haven and had re opened after closing down a short while ago. It was not busy as I think most people seem to have given up on it after its closure and/or were not aware it had reopened.

Admission prices were reasonable at $39.95 age 10 to 54, $34.95 for seniors (over 55), Juniors $34.95, kids under 2 free. I decided to pay the $39.95 rather than save myself $5 and reveal my true age, sad I know.

The park consists of 41 rides, 12 shows some amazing gardens and some animals. As far as the rides go I would say they are aimed at the younger children rather than teens with 5 coasters and a spinning rapids ride (tallest in the world is claimed) and lots of others suitable for the under tens such as The Boardwalk Carousel, Citrus Line railroad Gear Jammers, Tiny Trotters and Upsy Daisy. The Paradise Sky Wheel is great for all the family and gives a fantastic all round view of the park.

The Gardens are a dream to walk via the Topiary Trail and cover 35 acres still guarded by the 70 year old Banyan Tree planted by the original founder Dick Pope. Many shows will appeal to all our particular favourite is the water ski show but there is an ice show and the pirates in Cypress cove to look out for The newly opened “Natures Way” is home to 300 furry animals and include a jaguar, Crocs, gators and a beautiful aviary full of exotic birds.

In all this is a great family day out and although my kids are 14 & 16 they really enjoyed the day. Bring your swimmers too as there is a lovely pool and lazy river to enjoy and I suggest a picnic basket to laze by the poolside.

Directions Midway between Orlando and Tampa the park is located less than 60 minutes from both metro areas in Winter Haven. Cypress Gardens is off U.S. Highway 27 south of Interstate 4.

From Orlando: I-4 WEST to exit 55 (U.S. Hwy 27 SOUTH). Continue South on U.S. Hwy. 27. Turn right off U.S. Highway 27 at State Road 540/Cypress Gardens Boulevard. Park is 4 miles on the left.
