Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede

We’ve never been much for dinner shows but thought that we would give this one a go and visited in December between Christmas and New Year. I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised and I would certainly recommend this to others.

It is very easy to get to, off exit 68 of the I4, just by Orlando Premium Outlets, and parking is plentiful. If you get there in good time you also get a chance to see the horses in their horse boxes as you walk along to the entrance.

Once you get through into the main building, there is a chance for you to have your photo taken and then a small gift shop that has some interesting and novel souvenirs.

You then go through to the bar area for a pre-show warm up act. When we went it was a juggling comedian, whose name I can’t quite recall, but he was certainly very entertaining. Alongside making lots of jokes, he managed to juggle lots of bits and bobs and ended up balancing golf clubs on top of golf balls, which looked a lot better than it sounds!

We had a chance to get a couple of drinks in and a pre-dinner snack and it was a great way to start the evening.

We then went through to the arena and arrived at our seats. As if often the case at these shows, there isn’t a great deal of elbow room between you and your neighbour, but then again that just makes things a little friendlier and we had a good chat with a family from Missouri, which also made the evening go along nicely.

We were introduced to our server and the food and drink began to arrive. Not gourmet, but then you wouldn’t expect that would you, but it was hot and tasty and not at all bad considering how many people they were serving. We had a hot and tasty soup to start, followed by a whole Cornish hen and vegetables, followed by a dessert.

This was all being served as the show began, and what a show it was. We had been expecting participants to be dressed in either confederate or union uniforms, given the theme of the event, but as it was Christmas, they were actually dressed as red or green pixies! No matter, we all got into the spirit of things.

It was fabulous to see the riding skills on display and the horses were absolutely beautiful. I wasn’t so sure at first about the nativity scene that can down out of the ceiling on a platform or the ice skaters, because they seemed a little “off topic” but it certainly made for an original show.

My favourite part was the pig racing – it was so cute to see the little guys, wiggling their tails, and racing for the line, chased by enthusiastic shepherds and the ostrich racing was a real scream.

It was a really fun evening and there was a real mixed audience, young and old, and I think it amounts to a great night out. We’re certain to try it another time and would recommend it to others.
