Epcot’s Annual Flower and Garden Festival 2012

I went to take a sneak preview at the 2012 Annual International Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot, just before it officially opened

This is the first time that my stay had coincided with this event. I had been to their Food Festival in October so knew what to expect in terms of renewed atmosphere and activity.

I must admit to having a love of Epcot anyway but I have to say this festival, which takes place for approximately 2 months every year in spring, could turn out to be my favourite season for a visit to this particular theme park. I think that Epcot is not quite as popular with children but the fabulous topiary of so many of their favourite characters might make it more appealing to some.

The topiary figures were mostly around world showcase whilst the area between there and future world was ablaze with sweeping colour and flower butterflies. New topiary for this year included the’ Cars ‘figures positioned in Japan, and the characters from Buzz Light-year which were located in the American pavillion. They joined all the traditional Disney characters which included Lady and the Tramp in Italy, Hundred Acre Wood characters in England, Snow White and the seven dwarfs in Germany and beauty and the Beast in France. Other topiary could be seen at the front of the park and on the path to World Showcase. Pluto, Donald and Daisy at one end and Peter Pan and captain Hook at the other

Mexico was adorned with orchids; Norway stave church had a beautiful display at its base whilst China pavilion displayed a wonderful floral dragon. The garden in Morocco was adorned with sculptures collaged with seeds and shells (a good idea for craft I noted). So much colour, scent and texture were a treat for the senses. The area in Canada just outside Le Cellier was looking more picturesque than usual and I could imagine that when the flowers have all had chance to spread and grow taller that it would be even more splendid.

There was a lot of new merchandise available especially for this event and I thought that most of it was more attractive than many of the goods that fill the shops. I liked the bags and Ts with topiary characters and some of the stick pins for gardens and mugs would have been in my bag if I hadn’t already been on the limit for my 23kg suitcase however the Minnie and Mickey gnomes ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! A step too far for me.

Based on this preview visit I would highly recommend this event and hope to catch it after the official opening next year.
