Old Town

Florida Guide > Places to Visit

Old Town has had a lot of money spent on it in the past couple of years. It’s now a lot more professional and the car parking has been improved enormously. It’s now a large tarmacced area at the bottom end of the area. Note:- whenever a cruise is being run they do make a $10 charge. Also, don’t think about parking across US192 from the main entrance behind the restaurants as they do have warning signs about being towed if not one of their customers. We’ve seen this happen, so don’t risk it.

The main entrance (see photo) now has an entrance arch which is well lite at night. Generally the area is split, between the Funspot fair type rides, including a ferris wheel on the left when going thru the main entrance and the right which is the Old Town street.

Old Town is “famous” for it’s Saturday and Sunday night car cruises. These feature old cars driving down the main street. Friday is for muscle cars and Saturday nights is for Hot rods and antique cars. We prefer the Saturday night as we like these types of cars. Both cruises start at 8. 30 pm. For the motorbike fans, there is a cruise on Thursday, albeit this is not as well attended as the car cruises.

By the main entrance and a chequers fast food place is the vomatron, a large spinning thing. We do mean large, it’s 200 feet long with seats! . We’ll leave it up to you, to work out why it got it’s name.
Next to it, is the slingshot, which is akin to a large catapult pointing upwards with a seat in the middle. We like grabbing a bite to eat at chequers, (cheap, cheerful and the loaded fries are great), then sitting by these two attractions seeing the events unfold. You can see all sorts of bravado and not to mention the screaming.

After this, we take a wander down the main street, popping into shops. There are a few t-shirt shops / gift places which have a unique selling point. One is a 50’s based shop -all things rock ‘n roll, another is beach themed. There are 3 bars, one has karoke. Lot’s of small places serving food, anything from churro’s to hamburgers. There is also a haunted attraction, I won’t give the game away and say what can happen.

Midway down main street, off to one side, is a stage, and there is normally live music whenever a cruise is on. There are invariably a few people line dancing to the band. This area is used as a social occasion, as lots of people bring chairs and enjoy the show. They do have a mix of bands, from rock ‘n roll, country and even rock bands. For me, the bar next to the stage is a prime vantage point.

Further down the street is one shop which is the highlight for us. Black rock minerals has been a stable feature of Old Town for many years. Even if you are not into geology this is a fascinating place.

The other side of Old Town is the fun spot, with fair ground type of rides. They have the skycoaster, which where you are strapped into a sling, hung horizontally, then pulled up 300 feet in the air and dropped. We thought it enough just to watch from below.
