Our Stay at Treasure Island Part 5

Florida Guide > Other Florida

One of the original reasons my parents decided to stay at Treasure Island was its easy access to shops restaurants and beaches and it allowed different family members to do what they wanted rather than tagging along in a group.

If you want to use a car St Petersburg, Madeira, Reddington, Indian Shores and Clearwater beaches are within easy access. There is also the Tyrone Mall with its excellent selection of department as well as smaller stores. Seminole Mall is a must for bargain hunters here you will find Ross, Steinmart and Bells. However you do not always need a car to get to most of these because Treasure Island has a great regular Trolley Bus service that stops practically outside the Thunderbird.

If you want to go further a field you can go over the Sunshine Bridge (not for those who do not like heights! ) to Ellenton Factory Outlets.

My parents spent a most enjoyable day at St Petersburg town and they highly recommend initially taking the Trolley Bus tour when you get there.

Closer to the Thunderbird is the famous St Johns Pass with its many restaurants (Bubba Gump recently opened here) that specialise in fish as well as a Chinese restaurant and several bars. There are also lots of little boutiques and souvenir shops. We usually take a taxi to here it costs about $5.

Located directly opposite the Thunderbird is a very large new store that sells every kind of beach requirement as well as souvenirs, this also has a small pizza/coffee shop.

To the right is Ricky Ts a favourite with the locals. Here you can enjoy meals all day from 7. 00am. There is a nice outdoor seating area and bar we sometimes have breakfast here or stroll over in the late afternoon for a drink and to listen to the live music. Next door to Ricky Ts is Walgreens where you can get good bargains in cosmetics – check out their brochures in the Sunday papers to see the current week’s offers.

In the Plaza opposite the Motel you will find a Welcome Centre where you can get lots of information. Nearby for the fishermen is a Bait and Tackle shop.

Also in the Plaza is one of our favourite breakfast places, Foxys. All the waitresses wear shorts and tee shirts and the place has a real casual beach atmosphere. Many of the locals eat here amongst our favourite breakfast items are French Toast, Corn Beef Hash and their Pork Chops and Eggs.

At the back of the Plaza the R Bar is situated. We highly recommend this although from the outside you might not be tempted to enter. Their breakfasts are huge, Thursday nights is all you can eat crabs Legs which are fantastic and they have live music at nights and it can get very busy here in the summer.

We like Treasure Island if you visit I hope you will too.
